The Magnolia Beverage Masters are starting its recovery period from sick bay as it trounced the Alaska Aces yesterday in a road game in Cagayan De Oro City. Definitely, Magnolia Beverage Masters has followed some of the prescriptions given by the doctor below:

There’s no doubt that Magnolia Beverage Masters accomplished this in the game against the Aces. They don’t showed signs of complacency and were able to get the job done in the crucial minutes of the game. - Dorian needs to blend with the team fast
Dorian is slowly blending with the team. His 8 points in this ballgame is already a bonus and more importantly, he brings muscle to somehow thin frontline of Magnolia Beverage Masters. As the big DAWG gets back in game shape, we can again expect double-double performance from him. - The Guards/Shooters must step up
Lordy Tugade stepped up once again to lead Magnolia Beverage Masters with his 27 points production. Danny Seigle started it all up in the first half then Tugade finished what he left off in the second half. Dondon Hontiveros and LA Tenorio also contributed significant numbers. Rico Villanueva meanwhile lead the scoring of the frontliners with 15 points. - Fortify the team defense

The Magnolia Beverage Masters have been so sick lately. It has become so contagious that even the fans were getting sick and tired of the 3 game losing skid. Getting out of sick bay will not be easy but following the 5 Things The Doctor Prescribed will be a good start.
- Play 48 minutes of intense ballgame
It doesn't matter if Magnolia Beverage Masters started or finished strong. The key to winning every ballgame is to give the opposing teams 48 minutes of hell on both ends of the court. When Magnolia Beverage Masters started strong against Red Bull and Coke, they lack the firepower to finish them off. Against Barangay Ginebra, they were simply outplayed by the Gin Kings. - Develop a killers' instinct
This was the main reason why Magnolia Beverage Masters lost to Red Bull and Coke after a masterful win over Purefoods and Talk and Text. Complacency seems to crept the Magnolia Beverage Masters players everytime they led the opposition before the last crucial minutes of the game. - Dorian needs to blend with the team fast
It's understandable that Dorian is not yet performing 100% as he used to play for two reasons. Being not yet 100% in game shape and a little chemistry factors. In order for the Masters to win the remaining 4 games, Dorian needs to contribute...FAST! - The Guards/Shooters must step up
In Magnolia Beverage Masters lossing efforts to Barangay Ginebra, Magnolia Beverage Masters guards were simply outplayed by their Gin Kings counterpart. In that game, none of Magnolia Beverage Masters vaunted guards scored in double digit as compared to the Gin Kings combo of Jay-jay Helterbrand and Ronald Tubid. To add insult to the injury, the two combined to score 61 points in that ballgame, a production that is almost double what all the guards and shooters of Magnolia Beverage Masters contributed. - Fortify the team defense
As with any games, the most important thing that a team should not forget is to play solid team defense. The team can still win ballgames even if the offense is not that good for that night as long as they limit the other team's production. As the famous saying says "there's no offnight in defense".
Should they follow these prescriptions, it's just a matter of time before they fully recover and get back in fighting shape. And probably the best time to start taking these prescription is this afternoon's game against the Alaska Aces!

Repeat or Revenge: A Magnolia Beverage Masters vs Talk N Text Phone Pals (2nd Round) Primer
Magnolia Beverage Masters battle the Talk and Text Phone Pals in today's game header for the second time this conference. On their first meeting, Talk and Text defeated Magnolia Beverage Masters, 100-94 at the Fresnedi Gym in Muntinlupa. The phone pals started strong on that game and lead Magnolia Beverage Masters 12-3 right on the opening quarter. Magnolia Beverage Masters eventually never recovered but put up a determined chase until the last buzzer.
Magnolia Beverage Masters would attempt to win back to back games, which they have done on their first 2 games. Since then, Magnolia Beverage Masters stayed in a roller-coaster ride winning a game and losing the next game. At a 6-4 standing, Magnolia Beverage Masters will try to even solo third placer Alaska milk with a 7-4 card.
Magnolia Beverage Masters played its best game ever this conference last Friday by beating the Purefoods Tender Juicy giants, 108-86. The win would certainly boost the team's confidence against the slumping
phone pals. Talk and Text sports a 5-5 record in the fifth spot but coming off a two-game loosing skid.
Keys to winning the game:
1. Play suffocating defense
Just like in the game against Purefoods, Magnolia Beverage Masters should continue to play good team defense in order to neutralize the phone pals scoring machines.
2. Control the boards
Talk and Text is a tall team with many bigmen able to grab the boards. Even if Asi is no longer around, Ali Peek would certainly be a big headache in rebounding.
3. Ball rotation and player spacing
The ball was evenly shared during the win over PF with 5 players scoring in double digit. Spacing is also important to enable the big men to operate the paint.
4. Attack the paint
Magnolia Beverage Masters big men started the first half by attacking the paint getting the PF bigmen in early foul trouble. Enrico and Eman spearheaded that attack.
5. Outside shooters should click
With the bigmen controlling the boards, our outside snippers eventually got the confidence draining threes and short range jumpers. Chris Calaguio shows why he is deadly as as ever when he drained 5 three point shots in 7 tries.
Magnolia Beverage Masters should be careful of:
1. Complacency
Sure they win big time against Purefoods last Friday. But that is just one game. Talk and Text is another case. Underestimating this team will be a big mistake.
I expect this game to be an exciting one. This will start the Phone Pals campaign without Asi Taulava guarding the post. Magnolia Beverage Masters should capitalize on the chemistry factor that was brought in when Ali Peek swapped places with Asi Taulava.
Will the Talk and Text Phone pals repeat or Magnolia Beverage Masters will get its sweet revenge? You be the judge!

Untold Stories - Magnolia Beverage Masters vs. Purefoods (2nd Round)

Player of the Game:
Chris Calaguio
The former Letran Knights burned the net with his precision baskets both in the short and three point range, leading all Magnolia Beverage Masters scorers with 22 big points. His field goal was a whopping 8/11 and 5/7 from downtown.
Honorable mention goes to Danny Seigle who waxed hot early in the first half scoring 8 points with just 4 minutes inside the court.
Battle of the Heavyweights:
Rico vs. Kerby
Posting from the high post, Rico was hit in the face from behind when Kerby tried to tapped the ball. Rico reacted by giving Kerby dagger looks. The ploy did not work for PF as Rico converted both charities as Kerby was called for flagrant foul 1.
Eman vs. Adducul
Eman was hunting Adducul all night long. He was responsible for Adducul's first 2 fouls early in the first quarter. In exchange for his tough defense, he usually received accidental elbows from the General. He reacted in one instance and was called for second motion. He repays Adducul with a monstrous look.
The Graduates (6 fouls):
Willy Wilson
He played a good game with 7 points joining the forray of paint attackers for MBM.
Samigue Eman
Played good defense for the team by harrassing slashing attackers and PF bigmen and grabbing rebounds. His 10 points is a welcome contribution for Magnolia Beverage Masters.
Other Trivia:
Gabby Espinas also entered the hardcourt but only during garbage time when the game is almost over. His short stint was unimpressive scoring only 2 points.
Magnolia Beverage Masters Exacts Revenge vs. Purefoods
Magnolia Beverage Masters played its best game so far this conference by crashing the league-leading Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants 108-86 in the second round of the 2007 Smart-PBA Philippine Cup at the packed Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
What Worked Wonders In This Game:
1. Suffocating Team Defense
This allows the team to limit PF's top guns. PF is bleeding to get their points in every ball possession.
2. Superb Post Play
Early in the first quarter, the Beverage Masters went to their big men in the post to attack the big men of the opposing team. The ploy worked wonders as several PF big men got into early foul trouble.
3. Red-hot Snipping
Our shooters were too sharp for PF to handle. Chris Calaguio leads the team with an 8/11 field goal and 5/7 from beyond the arc.
4. The Desire To Win
The whole team pounded PF until the last minutes of the fourth quarter. They lead as much as 38 points somewhere in the third or fourth quarter.
To sum up, Magnolia Beverage Masters played like a well-oiled machine breaking the spirits of the pacesetting giants. What a way to start the second round! Hopefully this signals the start of our winning streak.
